NEXUS Card FAQ
The NEXUS card is a trusted traveler initiative from the United States Customs and Border Protection. It was designed
to expedite land, air and sea travel for low risk travelers between Canada and the
United States.
My NEXUS card won’t work in the NEXUS lane what should I do?
You should call one of the NEXUS Enrolment Centers to report the defect in your card.
They will arrange a replacement free of charge.
How long is the NEXUS pass valid for?
NEXUS membership is valid for 5 years. After this time you must renew your membership
and pay the appropriate fees.
How do I change my name on my NEXUS card?
You must contact your nearest NEXUS enrolment center or call the CBP Help Desk at 1-866-530-4172
to update your personal details.
I am a permanent resident of Canada. If I have a NEXUS card will I still need a US
visa to cross into the United States?
Yes. Even though you are a NEXUS card holder, you must hold a valid US visa if you
are a citizen from a country that is not covered by the Visa Waiver Program.
I submitted my application for a NEXUS pass 2 months ago, and would like to know
what the status of my application is. Is there a number I should call to receive
this information?
You can log onto your GOES account on the GOES website or call the GOES hotline on 1-866-530-4172.
They will be able to assist you further.
My wife and I applied for NEXUS cards at the same time. I have been invited for interview
but my wife’s application is still under review. Why have we not been processed
together?
Each NEXUS application is checked individually with both law enforcement and immigration
agencies in the USA and Canada. Some checks are processed faster than others depending
on both the agencies’ workload and the individual applicant’s status. If your wife’s
application was submitted over 4 weeks ago you should contact the GOES hotline on
1-866-530-4172. They will be able to assist you further.
Do I need to have a passport to get a NEXUS card?
As long as you are a Canadian or American citizen you do not need a passport to
get a NEXUS card. However, if you intend to use your NEXUS card for air travel between
the US and Canada, you are advised to obtain a valid passport. You can apply for
a NEXUS card using your birth certificate, citizenship certificate, naturalization
certificate or certificate of Indian Status.
Is it possible to apply for a family NEXUS pass?
No. Each applicant regardless of age must apply individually for a NEXUS card; this
includes infant applicants. Canadian and US border agencies screen each individual
applicant separately; the reason for this is that within a family there may be a
member who does not fit the eligibility requirements.
I am a Nigerian student living legally in Canada on a study visa. Can I apply for
a NEXUS card?
No. You can apply for NEXUS if you are a Canadian or US citizen or a legal permanent
resident card holder who has spent the past three years in Canada, the US or both
countries.
I was convicted of a DUI offence 7 years ago. Am I eligible for a NEXUS card?
It is unlikely that you will be approved for a NEXUS card. Applicants with criminal
records of this nature are usually denied a NEXUS card because they do not meet
the low risk requirement of the program. Applicants with criminal records should
obtain a pardon before applying for NEXUS.
My wife and our two children have applied for NEXUS cards. Will we be able to attend
the interview as a family or will the children have to have separate interviews?
You will all be able to interview as a family, but when you book your interview
you will each have to book separately for the same day and for consecutive time
slots. When you arrive for the first interview the border official will see you
all together.
What documents must I take to my NEXUS interview?
You must take all of the documents listed on your letter of conditional approval.
You must also take your conditional approval along to the interview. In addition
to this, some enrolment centers require additional documentation, which is listed
at the time you book your interview. Generally, the documents are your passport,
PR card or US visa (if relevant), drivers license, proof of address and any other
document you used to apply for your NEXUS card e.g. birth certificate, citizenship
card etc.
Can I schedule my NEXUS interview at any enrolment center in the country or must
I use the one closest to my home?
You can schedule your NEXUS interview at any NEXUS enrolment center in Canada or the US. NEXUS enrolment
centers are located on both sides of the Canada-US border and at major airports
in Canada.
I was unable to have an iris scan at my NEXUS interview. Can I still use the card
for air travel?
No. You must contact an enrolment center with iris scanning facilities in order
to use the card when you fly. You should call the NEXUS hotline on 1-866-530-4172
to find out which locations offer this facility then make an appointment directly.
Can I use my NEXUS card instead of a passport to cross the Canadian border?
Yes, provided you are a Canadian or American citizen. The NEXUS card conforms to
all the requirements of the Western Hemisphere Agreement. It is recognized by border
officials as proof of identity and citizenship. If you are a permanent resident
you must still travel with your passport and PR card and valid US visa. If you are
travelling by air you should travel with your passport even if you are a Canadian
citizen.
I am separated from my husband and want to apply for NEXUS cards for my children.
Will they be approved or does my ex husband have to agree to them having NEXUS cards?
When you file you NEXUS application one parent or guardian has to give parental
consent. However, when you attend your NEXUS interview with the children, the border
official may ask for documentation proving custody or consent from the other parent
for the children to travel abroad. Additionally you may be asked for this proof
by border guards every time you cross the border or leave the country, so it is
advisable to get a notarized letter of consent from your ex husband before applying.
How much does it cost for a NEXUS card?
Adult applicants aged 18 years or over must pay a $50 fee at the time they submit
their application. Children under 18 do not have to pay this fee.
How long does it take to get a NEXUS card?
The process from start to finish depends on which enrolment center you wish to book
for your interview. From submitting your application to Conditional approval usually
takes up 4 to 6 weeks. After this time, if you meet the program requirements, you
will receive a conditional approval letter inviting you to book an interview. Some
interview centers, namely those located at land border points of entry have immediate
interview slots, whereas those located in airports tend to be booked months in advance.
Once you have had your interview and have been approved for the NEXUS program your
membership card should arrive in the mail within 7 to 10 days after your approval.
My passport expired and I have a new one. How do I update my information?
You can update your passport or permanent resident card by logging onto the GOES website using the ID number and password that you used
to enrol in to the NEXUS program. If the document was not used to apply for NEXUS,
you must call or visit an enrolment center to make the change.
We are planning to travel to the US with some friends who are not NEXUS card holders.
Can we still use the NEXUS lanes?
No. Every member travelling with you must be a card holder in order for you to use
the NEXUS lane. If you attempt to use the NEXUS lane with non-members or you attempt
to drop off non-NEXUS passengers before you pull up to the NEXUS kiosk, your cards
will be revoked, you will loose your trusted traveler status and you will not be
able to apply for a NEXUS card again.
