Q. Our son is going back to Canada from the UK where he has been working for the last year in June this year. We will need a new passport for him as his will expire Jun 2012 and he is re- applying for another one year work visa for the UK that will run from July 2011- July 2012.The work visa takes a couple of weeks to process ( if all goes well) and he will only have about 4-5 weeks time to process BOTH the passort then the work visa so will that be considered urgent enough for them to give us the passort in 24 hours? Last Summer when we applied for the work visa it took almost 4 week. It was very nerve racking and costly due to having to change flights! thank you for your assistance on this, I really appreciate it!

To request an urgent pick-up service you must apply in person at a Passport Canada office*

You will be asked to provide proof of urgency, for example a travel itinerary showing proof of payment. Passport Canada will listen to each individual situation and take appropriate action on a case-by-case basis.
Additional fees will apply on top of the regular passport fee (urgent pick-up 24 hours - C$70 + passport fee)

Please note standard pick-up time is 10 working days if presented in person.

Q. My current Passport is damaged from going through the washer machine. I have used it to go to Panama and Mexico in the past and was told that I should replace it or one of these times it might not be accepted. I looked at the simplified website application but it says that I can’t use or submit a damaged passport. How should I go about applying for another passport? regards,

As your current passport is damaged you would need to apply for a new passport using the

‘ADULT GENERAL PASSPORT APPLICATION for Canadians 16 years of age or over applying in Canada or from the USA’.

Your current passport would need to be returned with the form, along with a completed "Statutory Declaration" form PPTC 203, available from any Passport Canada regional office in Canada, any Canadian government office in the USA or at www.passportcanada.gc.ca

  1. A completed application form signed by your guarantor;
  2. Two identical, up-to-date passport photos;
  3. Documentary proof of Canadian citizenship (for example; a Canadian birth certificate and

Q. My passport expires Sept 20/2011 and I am planning to visit Las Vegas for 5 days from Aug 5 to Aug 10th, 2011 - will my passport still be valid for this trip. I am 80 yrs old and do not plan to travel after that trip – thanks

Canadian Citizens' passports are NOT required to be valid for six months past their intended date of departure. Their passports must only be valid up until the date of their intended departure. As a Canadian Passport Holder you will be able to travel to the United States as your passport expires past your intended date of return.

Some additional exceptions exist. For example, a Canadian citizen who has a criminal record or any other ineligibility might be required to apply for a visa.

Landed immigrants (Canadian permanent residents) may have to apply for entry visas based on the country that issued their passport.

Q. After giving birth to my child i wanna travel so I want to take the birth certificate and the passport as soon as possible what is the limited time to take it in how many business days?

You will need to arrange the proper documentation before your baby can travel. Firstly you must register the birth of your child before you can apply for a birth certificate.

The Newborn Registration Service lets you register your newborn's birth; apply for their birth certificate and their Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the same time. Time frame is on average 4 weeks.

Once you have the birth certificate, you can apply for your child’s passport. The easiest way to do this is to download a child's passport application from the Passport Canada website. Then submit the completed application along with two passport photographs, a fee, and your baby's original proof of Canadian citizenship – a birth certificate or a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship. You can submit an application in person or send it in by mail. The quickest way to get a passport is to apply in person at a Passport Canada office. If you are able to provide proof of travel you can get the passport as quickly as 24hours. Otherwise the normal processing time is 10-20 working days after submission of a fully completed application with supporting documentation.

Q. Where can I get a Simplified Renewal Application for my Canadian passport?

Please visit Passport Canada for the required application form:

Q. If you have been charged with a DUI can you still get your passport?

The Canadian government can refuse to issue a passport to a person who has been charged with a serious criminal offence (for example; kidnapping), a past or pending DUI charge will not ordinarily result in the denial of a passport, however if you are on probation or are charged with an offence and are awaiting trial, you should wait until after the probation has ended or the trial is over to apply for your passport. Also if you have any restrictions for traveling outside of Canada, you will not be able to apply.

If none of the above applies complete the passport application form located on Passport Canada website:

http://www.ppt.gc.ca/cdn/form.aspx?lang=eng&region=Canada

When you submit your application (by mail or in person), include a copy of your criminal record. You will receive a written decision by mail regarding the status of your application that will alert you to any decision by Passport Canada to launch an investigation to determine if your criminal past bars you from being issued a passport.

Q. I can not find my passport. It has been a long time since I have needed it. I now would like to go on vacation to Disney World Florida. I would like a new passport by the 21st of June. Is this possible.

The request for a replacement passport can be made in Canada at any Passport Canada office or at the nearest Canadian government office abroad.

A replacement passport, which may only be valid for a limited period, may be authorized if strict requirements are met. These include the submission of:
  1. A completed application form signed by your guarantor;
  2. Two identical, up-to-date passport photos;
  3. Documentary proof of Canadian citizenship (for example; a Canadian birth certificate and

  5. A Statutory declaration form concerning a lost or stolen Canadian passport; needs to be completed (form PPTC 203, available from any Passport Canada regional office in Canada, any Canadian government office in the USA or at www.passportcanada.gc.ca).
If you are able to provide proof of travel you can get the passport as quickly as 24hours. Otherwise the normal processing time is 10-20 working days after submission of a fully completed application with supporting documentation.

To apply for a passport for your daughter, visit Passport Canada’s website and fill out an interactive application form (Adult Simplified Renewal Passport Application for Canadians applying in Canada or from the USA).

Q. Hi, basically my Canadian passport has expired, but I need to travel within the next few days so I cannot apply for a new passport via the standard method as it takes up to 4 weeks. Is there anyway to get an emergency extension on my old passport or to get a 1 day emergency 'passport' or whatever else? If so how does this work?

There is no such thing as extending the validity of a passport issued for 5 years. The maximum validity of any Canadian passport is 5 years. If your passport has expired, you will have to apply for a new one.

You can apply for a passport within 24 hours or within the next working day (depending on the emergency reason). To do this you need to apply in person to make the application at a Passport Canada office (search: service locations at this site).

Proof of travel is required and the passport must be picked up from the regional office where the application was submitted. The fee for express pickup service is CDN$70 (in addition to the passport fee).

Contact Passport Canada at 1-800-567-6868 for more information in this regard.

Q. Do I have to renew my Canadian passport 30 days prior to the expiration date?

This is not essential. If your current passport has expired, is within 12 months of the expiry date, or if all visa pages are full, you may apply for a new passport. Please visit Passport Canada website for a step-by-step guide.

Q. If I am applying for my children's passport, do I need the long birth certificate or the short one will do

Both birth certificates are accepted, however to avoid possible delay’s Passport Canada strongly recommend you provide a long-form birth certificate showing information on both parents.

Please note only documents entitled "Birth Certificate" or "Certificate of Birth" issued by a provincial/territorial authority in Canada are accepted. A birth certificate may be obtained from the vital statistics authorities of the child's province or territory of birth.

Find out more about passports for children.

Q. My passport expires 1 day after I return. Can I still use it?

You would be able to travel back into Canada on a Canadian passport; however some countries require your passport be valid for six months beyond your date of entry. For that reason, before travelling to a country, ensure that your passport will be valid long enough by contacting the consular mission of the country you plan to visit or check the Country Travel Report.

It is recommended that your passport be valid beyond your expected date of return home.

To avoid difficulties while travelling, we recommend that you obtain a new passport before leaving if there is any chance that your passport could expire during your travels.

Since 1977, Canadian citizens have been allowed to hold dual nationality. If you were born (as the first generation born) in Australia, and your father can prove he was a Canadian citizen at the time of your birth, you should not have any problems getting a Canadian passport.

You will need an original of your Dad's provincial birth certificate (if he was born in Canada) or Certificate of Canadian Citizenship and YOUR birth certificate from your home State in Australia, showing your parents’ names. You will require a supporting letter from your mother, stating that she gave birth to you, where and when.

Please note the new photos do not need to be signed by anyone. However, the name and address of the photographer or studio, as well as the date the photos were taken, must be provided on the back of one photo.
If you are applying using the standard Adult Passport Application form the guarantor must be a Canadian citizen 18 years of age or older.

My 11 year old son needs to renew his passport. I was told that kids can reapply but have to get a new passport. Is this right? If not, do I need to fill out the "guarantor" again? In the "declaration of applicant" part, am I the "applicant" as I am doing this on his behalf OR is he the applicant?

You are correct; there is no "renewal" procedure as such for children under the age of 16 years. When your child’s current passport has expired, or is within 6 to 9 months of expiring, or if all visa pages are full, you should apply for a new passport as some countries require 6 months validity on your passport before permitting you to enter. If you do not have upcoming plans for travel, you may submit an application for a new Canadian passport at any time allowing 15 working days for processing.
